They estimate modern language started about 50,000 years ago by evidence of the kinds of functions humans were doing such as projectile points, engraving tools, knife blades, and drilling and piercing tools. Teaching offspring or other group members how to manufacture such detailed tools would have been difficult without the aid of language.
