William Faulkner uses omniscient point of view in his short story, "The Old People," to transform the narrative from a simple tale relating the events of a hunting trip into an evocative portrayal of what it takes to become a man in backwoods Mississippi. Faulkner's use of this point of view allows him to interpret the characters in a more elevated way than could have been done using first person point of view. The choice of writing the story in this manner gives the author much more latitude in describing the feelings and thoughts of the main characters, as well as examining the histories of some of them. In this particular story, those thoughts and feelings and histories are absolutely necessary for rendering a full portrait of characters who might otherwise have been dismissed as flat and uninteresting.
