Rust is a general term for a series of iron oxides, usually red oxides, formed by the reaction of iron and oxygen in the presence of water or air moisture.

If you store your nails were air moisture develops the red oxides will react with the oxygen and water and the output of this reaction is the breakdown of the Iron to produce iron oxides.

In my laymam's understanding on the term "rust", it forms if the nails are expose to water.
