What causes dark circles?

What causes our eyes to have dark circles? I think that's what we should first know before discovering how to treat it.

Build up of blood in the eyelids. The capillaries in this region are very sensitive in some people, and so they burst easily. This causes the dark purple to black coloring.

In my layman's term, one of the causes of dark circles under the eyes is due to lack of sleep.
