There are many different laws governing countries with regards to the amount of working hours performed in a week.

In Britain and Ireland, a 40 hour week is considered normal which works out to 5 working days at 8 hours per day, this came about during the industrial revolution in Britain in around 1817 where there was a campaign for 8 hours work, 8 hours recreations and 8 hours rest.

The 8 hour day was also achieved in the United States in 1842 due to a labor movement by Boston ship carpenters.

I guess depending on the need to work longer hours, a minimum of 8 hours a day or 48 hours a week.
